Holiday Clutter

Is your house cleaner during the holidays or messier? I try to keep mine clean, you never know when someone will stop by but it quickly falls apart. I get quickly overwhelmed by clutter. When I feel like the house is cluttered I lose my motivation to clean. Right now, the house feels majorly cluttered. There are three Christmas trees, enough pine garlands to wrap the whole house plus pine cones and Christmas pictures and decorations everywhere. Not to mention that every inch of closet space and all the floor space in my craft room is littered with Christmas gifts, … Continue reading

Mother-Daughter Holiday Bonding

My daughter is just six years old, but she’s already got eye-rolling down to a science. I know this because I am typically the one she practices on. Only in her mind she’s not practicing, she’s dying–a little bit inside–each time I embarrass her by, well, being her mom. I do things like remind her to put on her hat when I drop her off at school in the dead of winter (eye roll), tell her that she is not allowed to play unless she cleans up her room (double eye roll), and sing songs from the radio during carpool … Continue reading

Kids’ Crafts Week in Review: November 19-25

This week there weren’t many crafts and projects, since it was Thanksgiving. I was busy getting things ready for my family for the holiday. I also needed to spend some time with kids. They like crafts too, and they wanted me to take some time off to work on some projects with them instead of just writing about crafts. I hope you liked the ideas that were offered this week. Most of these can be used for other holidays besides the ones they’re listed for with just a few changes, so try some of them at other times throughout the … Continue reading

After the Holiday: Craft Clean Up

Awww! I can almost hear you saying, “Cleaning up is no fun!” You might be surprised to find out that I agree with you. I would much rather be doing something else like making stuff instead of cleaning up. But, wait, you might not realize that there is something really good about cleaning up when it comes to crafts. As you’re taking down all those cool things you made, you can save some for next year. You know what else? Some crafts will be things you have to take apart. I have thought up some great ideas while doing that! … Continue reading

How Clean Was Your Last Flight?

I have spent previous blogs addressing the issue of cleanliness (or lack of cleanliness) and hotel rooms. Now, it’s time to ask the question: “Just how clean are the airplanes we are riding in?” I just shelled out a TON of money to book flights home to Hawaii for the holidays AFTER I found out about a new investigation done on the state of airlines’ cleaning habits—apparently cleanliness has “taken a back seat to financial survival.” The results of the study (which I will get to in a moment) made me wince. What’s more, I immediately thought about how irate … Continue reading

Fun Father’s Day Reads

Forget about the tacky tie, fluorescent golf balls, and the tennis racket-shaped bug zapper.  What Dad really wants this Father’s Day is some quality time with the TV remote, his trusty recliner and a plate of bacon. Of course, what Dad wants for the upcoming holiday and what his enthusiastic young offspring want for him may be vastly different.  Fortunately, the following Father’s Day reads may be the key to compromise.  Kids can cuddle up with Dad on his favorite chair and share quality time reading the delightful holiday-themed page turners… while Mom cooks a pile of pork products for a post-story time … Continue reading

Time Saving Tips to Keep You on Track

With the holidays fast approaching, things might be getting a little busy around your house. Some people are able to back off a little bit from their home based businesses during the holiday season and focus on holiday activities. People with seasonal home based businesses are likely to be putting in as much time and effort as they can right now. Either way, you are likely to be feeling a little bit crunched for time. Of course, there are only so many hours in a day. While we can not create additional hours, we can employ a few strategies to … Continue reading

Get Lucky on St. Patrick’s Day

I know a lot of people looking to get lucky on St. Patrick’s Day. I’m hoping to win the lottery; my daughter is hoping to snag a leprechaun; and thousands of NCAA basketball fans are hoping their team advances to the Sweet 16. Saturday will reveal whose holiday wish comes true. In the meantime, you can increase your chances of having a fun-filled St. Patrick’s Day by taking matters into your own hands. Instead of pub crawling (or crawling away from a pub after one too many Guinnesses), consider hosting your own St. Paddy’s Day shindig filled with kid-friendly activities … Continue reading

Fun and Festive New Year’s Layouts

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but it can also translate into a room full of belly laughs if displayed just right. If you are looking to create a unique New Year’s layout for your holiday scrapbook, focus on the funny. For example, if your family members and friends tend to get a bit wild and wacky ringing in the New Year, be sure you capture the craziness with your camera. Then, continue snapping shots the morning after. By recording the recovery process in a series of photos, you will have ample material to craft an amusing scrapbook … Continue reading

The Challenge of Winter Break

It is holiday vacation time, and if you are like many home – based professionals, that means that your children are out of school or home from college. Chances are that you still have at least some work to do. The challenge of holiday vacation is similar to that of spring break and summer vacation, and it has two parts. The first is how to spend enough quality time with your children while still getting some work done, and the second is how to find fun, age appropriate things for your children to do independently or while in the care … Continue reading
