Frugal and Free Homeschooling {part 1}

Many have pushed aside the idea of homeschooling due to a lack of finances.  Many make the decision to stop homeschooling because of a difficult financial time.  Hearts that feel the impact of failing make decisions that cause them to retreat and not go forward. You are not a failure.  If you are experiencing a hard time or you feel you can not afford to homeschool, do not feel shame.  Many more struggle behind those happy Facebook status updates and expensive looking science experiments on blogs. A few years ago, I was in a financial situation that I feared would … Continue reading

Going to School with Kids

I have been asked several times over the last year how I could possibly manage to continue going to school with a child all while parenting alone. “How do you have time to do homework?” “Who watches your son for you?” “How do you find time to study?” “How do you keep your grades up?” All questions that have continued to come up time and time again. For the record, it hasn’t been an easy task, but here are some things that may help you attempt the college journey as a single mother. First off, don’t forget to check out … Continue reading

Beating the Back-to-School Blues

So long summer. My soon-to-be third grader heads back to school next week and she couldn’t be sadder. Ditto for the mama. I’ve never been one of those Staples commercial-type parents, who glide through school supply aisles belting out, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” at the top of my lungs. Honestly, I dread back-to-school season and the tears and tantrums that come with it. Consequently, I’ve learned to ease into the end of August. After all, crabby kid = crabby mommy. To lessen the back-to-school blow, I’ve been trying to distract my daughter with fun, affordable and … Continue reading

Homeschooling and the Work-at-Home Mom, Part One

This last August, Richele wrote a great article about being a homeschooling mom and running a home business at the same time. Those of us who like to operate from home seem to do it in a multi-facted way, don’t we? I thought I’d take a few minutes to add my thoughts to Richele’s. I am a homeschooling mom, and I have been since my children were born. I was taught at home, so it seemed perfectly natural to me. What would be weird is sending my kids to public school. I am also a work-at-home mom. I’ve done this … Continue reading

Back-to-School Broke

Just as my bank account was recovering from funding summer camps, soccer lessons, new swimsuits, pool fees, daily DQ runs and July jaunts to major theme parks, I’m being buried by back-to-school bills. I am officially back-to-school broke and classes around here don’t start for another two weeks. I kvetched when I saw Target and Wal-Mart employees replacing Fourth of July displays with school supplies, but then I realized that many kids are forced to head back to class at the end of July. Thousands of year-round students that attend Chicago Public Schools start the new academic year on Monday. … Continue reading

Back-to-School Green

It’s that time of year – chances are your youngins’ have started back to school. I’ve done blogs in the past on how to be green with school kids, but let’s do a quick review. Here are some questions you may want to ask your school: Do they recycle? If so, there should be bins labeled for paper, cans, and cardboard. What are the teachers teaching? Going green is becoming a bigger part of education, so don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher what she is doing as far as a green education. Don’t be afraid to suggest green projects … Continue reading

Back-to-School: Keeping Kids on Track

We’ve just hit the midpoint of summer vacation, though you’d never know it by strolling through Wal-Mart or Target. The popular discount retailers have their back-to-school displays front and center, reminding parents that they have yet another financial obligation looming. Personally, I am trying to ignore the stacks of new pencils, tablets and binders. However, I realize that parents of college-bound kids don’t have the same luxury. When Wal-Mart starts stocking Neutrogena Acne Facial Wash next to No.2 pencils, you know that the back-to-school clock is ticking. Thankfully, my daughter won’t be leaving for college for another decade or so. … Continue reading

The Euphoria of School Supplies

I love the movie “You’ve Got Mail.” At the beginning, when Tom Hanks’ character says that he wants to send Meg Ryan’s character a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils to celebrate fall, I know exactly what he’s talking about—there’s just something about pencils and pens and paper and crayons and markers … sigh. I love school supplies. I love it when they go on sale at all the stores just in time for back to school, and I always grab at least two cases of notebooks, packages upon packages of pens, and whatever fun little goodies they have on sale. … Continue reading
