Winter Woolens: Making Wool Crafts With Kids

I love wool. I love it in the morning and the afternoon, and I love to get it for Christmas and for my birthday. This Christmas, I got a bag of wool from my sister in law. I have a bag of unwashed wool in my workshop from the sheep at the local petting zoo. I just really, really like wool. Oddly enough, I also dislike knitting. I’m very left-handed, so doing anything with my right hand is a bit of a challenge. I much prefer crochet, since it only involves one hand. So what do I do with wool, … Continue reading

Seasonal Business Idea – Holiday Crafts

The holiday season brings to mind images of trees and snowflakes, wreaths, and other seasonal decorations. Many of us buy decorations at the store, but most of us have at least one or two things that we have made ourselves, or that were made for us by a family member or a friend. These items are usually the most treasured of our holiday decorations because they are hand made. Hand made holiday decorations are something that you could potentially turn into a seasonal home – based business. Of course, the time to think about selling your holiday decorations comes well … Continue reading

Key Chain Crafts for Kids

Even if your kids don’t really need key chains yet, they may still like to collect them. At our elementary school, the trend seems to be having as many key chains as possible hanging from book bags, backpacks, purses, and jackets. Laura Torres shared a zipper pull craft a while back that can also be easily adapted or used as is for a key chain. You can also make a similar style using plastic tops from soda bottles. You can find plain key rings at most any discount store, craft shop, or super center. Your kids can also make other … Continue reading

More Crafts to Decorate Your Child’s Room

Kids have their own taste and their own ideas. What better way to express their creativity than to use it to help decorate their bedrooms or playrooms? Ask your child about projects he or she would like to do, or try some of these: Artwork Your child can draw or paint pictures in colors that coordinate with his or her room décor. Then, simply have your child paint a plain wood frame to match. Another alternative is to make one or more of the picture frame projects in this section and use those to frame artwork or favorite photos. Make … Continue reading

A Very Frugal Christmas Part IV

Once the layers of chocolate were set but before they were hard snap set, I cut the big slab of peppermint into two by two inch pieces.  Gathering up all the candy tins that I had saved or found on clearance over the last year, I started filling the tins with both peanut brittle and peppermint bark to give as gifts to brothers, sisters, and our parents (the grandparents).   Two hand crocheted cotton washcloths accompanied each tin of candy and the parents (grandparents) also received an updated family photo that my husband and I took ourselves to save money … Continue reading

Working In A Winter Wonderland

This morning, I saw a friendly reminder from my friends here at Families.com that there are ninety – one days until Christmas. While I am currently doing my best to ignore the chilly mornings and evenings as well as any hint of the impending colder season, now is a great time to decide whether you are going to start a full time or part time seasonal home – based business. Here are three ideas to get you started. If you live somewhere where it snows, then you could start a snow removal business. Whether you offer a basic service like … Continue reading

Family Heirlooms that Keep You Warm

Most families have at least one or two family heirlooms that they treasure. They might take the form of photographs of relatives, jewelry from an ancestor, or your great grandmother’s china dishes. In my family, we have heirlooms that keep us warm, and that we can fall asleep with. I am talking about the crocheted blankets that my grandmother made. One of my grandmothers loved to crochet. I have memories of her spending hours crocheting while watching television. She seemed to have an endless supply of brightly colored yarn, and an equally endless supply of family members that she wanted … Continue reading

Winter Woolens: Finger Knitting

If you want to practice wool crafts, knitting, and crocheting with your children, but you find that they don’t have the patience or dexterity to finish a project, then finger knitting may be for you! A few years ago, I facilitated a knitting and crocheting class. A few of the women who came were not keen at all on the idea of knitting. It takes too long, they said. I heartily agreed. In the corner, my daughter was playing around with some yarn. She was trying to finger knit. One of the women asked what she was doing, so I … Continue reading

Cleaning Up The Craft Mess

I love to make things. I sew, crochet, paint and in general, make a mess. My craft room is probably the messiest room in the house. I tell myself it’s because I’m creative. Creative people need space and a mess to create. That’s just an excuse. I went into my craft room today to work on a craft for another blog and it was out of control. I had to spend several hours picking up and putting away before I could even think of creating. Let’s just say that when I was done cleaning, I had no energy for creating. … Continue reading
