Crafts for Less

Logan and I have always loved doing crafts together, but they can get rather pricey if you’re not careful. When I got divorced I was afraid this little bonding time would be over. How could I possibly afford to get craft supplies when I could barely get food on the table? This year all those uncertainties have gone out the window. I discovered the joy of crafting for less! Logan and I have been doing countless Christmas crafts this year. Tonight I pulled out the popsicle sticks. If you look hard enough you can usually find a box of 1000 … Continue reading

Countdown to Thanksgiving: Two Days from Today

Two more days! The time went by fast, didn’t it? So, how much do you have left to do? I’m feeling pretty good about things. Here’s my game plan for today: Food Prep Getting as much food ready as possible in advance will make the big day less stressful. Start by chopping, cutting, slicing, and dicing any veggies you’ll need for salads, stuffing, veggie trays, relish trays, and the like. Put your trays together and make any dips. Prepare garnishes and store them in covered containers. Another helpful idea is to measure out ingredients you’ll need on Thanksgiving and store … Continue reading

Kids’ Crafts Week in Review: November 19-25

This week there weren’t many crafts and projects, since it was Thanksgiving. I was busy getting things ready for my family for the holiday. I also needed to spend some time with kids. They like crafts too, and they wanted me to take some time off to work on some projects with them instead of just writing about crafts. I hope you liked the ideas that were offered this week. Most of these can be used for other holidays besides the ones they’re listed for with just a few changes, so try some of them at other times throughout the … Continue reading

Kids’ Crafts: Week in Review November 5 – 11

Here’s your weekly rundown of what we covered in Kids’ Crafts starting with November 11th (officially Veterans Day), and working our way back to the beginning of the week. How to Get Involved for Veteran’s Day Here we talked a little about what Veterans Day means and some ways people can actively get involved in honoring our heroes, from going to parades, to visiting Veterans, sending cards and making pictures, or donating time or money to a Veterans organization. For those that want to do something at home, I suggested displaying your flag and working on some patriotic projects (listed). … Continue reading

Holiday Crafts: Decorative Items for the Table

Won’t your child be proud to have his or her crafts displayed prominently during the holidays? What could be better for a child than showing off his handiwork at the dinner table (or should I say on the dinner table)? Custom Placemats Grab a flannel backed vinyl placemat in a holiday theme at any discount store. On the back measure and mark off rectangles about 12” high and 18” wide. Cut them out. Fold the edges over and crease them well. Use fabric glue to secure the edges so on the front, the edges will be nice and smooth. Glue … Continue reading

Thinking Of A Seasonal Home Based Business?

As I was out shopping today, I saw workers in one of the stores putting up Christmas trees in their home decorating department. My first reaction was to feel disgusted that Christmas merchandising seems to happen earlier every year. Seriously people, it is not even officially fall yet. My second reaction was that if I were someone who wanted to operate a seasonal business around the holidays, now would be the right time to start planning and preparing for it. The holidays can take up a lot of time and energy for many people. If you have the time, energy, … Continue reading

Three Easy Cornucopias

The cornucopia or “horn of plenty” is a very common symbol used for Thanksgiving tables. Until a few minutes ago, I had no idea that the cornucopia is from an ancient Greek myth, or that the original cornucopias were curved goat’s horns. I only knew that they are fun addition to the Thanksgiving table, a nice reminder of our blessings, and that I wanted to share a few ways for your children to craft some. One of the easiest ways to create a horn of plenty is to use ice cream cones. The children can fill them with candy corn, … Continue reading
