Family Bowling Night

About ten months ago, my daughter was invited to a birthday party at a bowling alley. She wasn’t even sure what bowling was, but since it was my husband’s turn to take her to the birthday party, she trooped off with a present under one arm. She came back, all alight and happy about the day and desperately wanting to go bowling again. Family Bowling Days A lot of bowling alleys are reinventing themselves to make them more family friendly. Two that I knew of in Virginia didn’t allow smoking on days that they were asking families to bring in … Continue reading

Growing Up With Bowling

We’ve had a couple of blogs about bowling (see “But They Couldn’t Save the Bowling Alley” and “Let’s Go Bowling”), but since bowling is such a part of pop culture, I thought I’d give you my spin on it. I was almost born in a bowling alley. My parents bowled on a league and my mother bowled right up until I was born. I remember spending much of my childhood in the bowling childcare center (why don’t they do that anymore?). Once I got old enough, of course, I was set loose with nickels (yes, nickels) in the game room … Continue reading

Winter Visits to Water Parks

I never understood why some people visit indoor water parks during the summer. I suppose if you are afraid of getting sunburned, then indoor water parks come in handy. And with more than 215 water park resorts open in 35 states, you won’t have trouble finding one to splash around in. Some of my top picks include: Wilderness Resort … Continue reading

Avoiding the Pregnancy Conversation Trap

If two people are having a conversation and at least one of them is pregnant, the conversation will most likely go in one of four directions. Negative: 1. The pregnant woman will ramble about her pregnancy and the other will get sick of hearing about it. 2. The non-expecting party will keep asking about the pregnancy, and the pregnant women will get sick of talking about it. Positive: 3. The discussion will be completely overtaken by baby talk and neither party minds. 4. Both parties avoid the subject altogether. This happens when one or both parties are either not interested … Continue reading

Subway Stories

My cousin celebrated his 25th birthday in New York City last night. (He lives on Long Island so the excitement surrounding the event wasn’t derived from the location.) As you can imagine it was a late night and he ended up riding the subway to a friend’s home in Queens. When I spoke to him earlier today he was desperately trying to find his iPod. From what he can remember, it was still in his jacket pocket when he boarded the subway last night. But, this morning it was gone. Losing your iPod on a New York City subway… please! … Continue reading
