Fall Crafts: Making Paper Bag Pumpkins

My daughter is far too young to wield a knife and carve crazy caricatures on fresh pumpkins so this time of year I am constantly on the look out for more age appropriate craft ideas. This next paper bag pumpkin project was a hit last year with our 3-year-old playgroup. Not only is it festive, but also simple and affordable. This particular project also proved especially helpful for my family as I was searching for craft projects my daughter and I could make for my ailing grandmother who had recently been placed in a nursing home in Hawaii following a … Continue reading

Fall Cookies: Classic Pumpkin Bars & Pumpkin Cookies with Browned Butter Frosting

Canned pumpkin will soon be on sale and I admit that my pantry shelves will be lined with the stuff. Canned pumpkin is more nutritious than fresh although I have to admit that adding cream cheese frosting to a pumpkiny confection laden with almost 2 cups of sugar probably negates any health benefits. For a healthier version of this, try Lisa Pietch’s recipe. This particular recipe comes from a family friend who I’m sure got it from another family friend. . .and so on. Pumpkin Bars You Will Need: 2 c. Flour 1 3/4 c Sugar 1 tsp baking soda … Continue reading

Spending Time With My Sister Part III

On the third day of visiting my sister her husband was off to work/class bright and early before we awoke. Once I awoke, I began making breakfast for the three of us (my usual egg omelet). We ate breakfast together after which I did my prenatal Pilate’s while my sister nursed the baby and my son read books. Our plan for the day was to get some baking done in part for preparation for a brown bag craft night for us ladies and in part to use up some of my sister’s orchard fresh apples. Baking in someone else’s house … Continue reading

Celebrate Halloween All Day

When it comes to celebrating Halloween, most people focus on trick-or-treating or costume parties, both of which are traditionally nighttime events. However, in our family, Halloween is an all-day affair. Basically, we party from sun up to sun down. I’m kidding. Though, we do nosh from sunrise to the witching hour, on foods I make especially for the holiday. Breakfast, lunch and dinner (and the occasional late snack) all feature Halloween-inspired foods, including these favorites that I whipped up last year: PUMPKIN PECAN PANCAKES Ingredients: 1 cup all purpose flour 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon … Continue reading
