100th Day of School Celebration

The 100th day of school has become a well-known celebration among primary classroom teachers. Teaching magazines are full of posters, banners, crowns, glasses, pencils, and novelties that can be purchased for the festivities. I think that the 100th day of school celebration began because of the accomplishment of being able to count to 100. Each day my kindergarten students and I count the days of school. My class’s 100th day of school will be Tuesday, January 30th. On Tuesday, we will count to 100! Some other activities that are planned include a 100th day parade. In this parade all of … Continue reading

Create A Family Book

In a previous blog, I wrote about birthday letters as a way to honor your child each year. This idea came from the book, Everyday Opportunities for Extraordinary Parenting and the ideas jammed inside the book are just that– extraordinary. Another great idea I found is a way to honor your entire family by creating a family book. The family book is a way to chronicle your family’s life and create lasting memories. Interested in creating your own family book? Read on to find out how. Start by purchasing a sturdy photo album or three-ring binder and clear plastic sleeves. … Continue reading

Daddy and Me Layout Ideas

T-minus eight days until Father’s Day. Fortunately, now that school’s out for the summer you shouldn’t have any problem finding extra hands to help craft the perfect Father’s Day gift—a Daddy and Me scrapbook. If you are short on time and talent, then consider purchasing a Dad-themed scrapbook kit which you can fill with personalized photos and sentimental journaling blocks. If you have older children, then consider creating a memory album from scratch. When you make your own scrapbook you can customize it to fit your dad’s personality and you’ll end up with a one-of-a-kind keepsake. Your personalized Daddy and … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day for Single Parents

Is Valentine’s Day only for lovebirds? I don’t think so. Should single parents be frustrated with being single on a day that focuses so heavily on couples? I hope not. I think that Valentine’s Day can be a fun day for us and our children. While it may be a reminder of being in a romantic relationship, the red hearts showing up everywhere shouldn’t have a negative impact on single parents. If you are happy being single on other days of the year, you should also be happy on Valentine’s Day. If you are looking for someone to enter into … Continue reading

March in the Snow

We got about six inches of snow Tuesday, and the forecast is now predicting 8-9 inches for tonight. There have been several different weather advisories, and I’d venture to say the kids will be sent home from school early. After having the last two days off for snow, the school decided to give it a try today. Conditions aren’t bad at the moment, but if this storm hits earlier than expected, they’ll be on their way home. It looks a little threatening, so I’ll be ready to go at a moment’s notice. I have lived here in the Ozarks for … Continue reading

Fun Crafts for Kids During Deployment

As this year begins there are thousands of families that will be split up by deployment. No, I’m not meaning divorce, but it is a time that families aren’t together. Some only seperated by states while others are seperated by countires. This is a very trying time for families, you miss each other terribly, children will have 100 questions that they ask every week and miss mommy/daddy even more. What types of things can you do for your child to make this transition a little bit easier? A few ideas I’ve tried and read about will be in these entries … Continue reading

Create a Review of this Past Year as a Family

This is a great family project to help keep memories fresh and to relive special moments together. You can use a scrapbook or create a keepsake book of your own design for this purpose. Have everyone think over the things that happened or the occasions that occurred or the special things you did together as a family throughout the year. Have each family member write down one item he or she liked for each month. They can write down several if they want to, but at least one is necessary. When the lists are compiled, everyone votes on the best … Continue reading

The First Thanksgiving Crafts

If your children are little and they don’t go to school yet, they may not know the story of the first Thanksgiving. You can tell them about it. Then, help them write their own stories, imagining what it might be like to be a pilgrim man, woman, boy, or girl, or one of these members of a Native-American family. Telling Stories Have your children give each family member a name, age, birth date, and then describe the physical characteristics of each person. Have them tell you or write down what they think each person’s chores may have included, and how … Continue reading

More on Crafts for Pets

Puppy or Kitten Scrapbook Purchase a ready to use scrapbook or make your own keepsake book (see related articles listed below). Save photos, old collars, charms, and other memorabilia to show how much your puppy or kitten has grown. A good idea is to make the left side a place to write down important events, shots, vet visits, birthday, etc., to document your dog or cat’s life and add photos and other memorabilia to the pages on the right. A cute way to decorate is to cover your book with fabric and then glue on dog biscuits covered with a … Continue reading
